masks

These photos are of a person, presumably a girl, wearing white, a white mask, and red nail polish, applying red lipstick in front of a red wall. I think the colors drawn out, primarily red and white, work well together and make the viewer think concepts such as of passion and purity. I think the lighting might be slightly overexposed, making the white too bright. However, I think the general idea of the photos is conveyed.

I based the general idea for my shoot off of Cindy Sherman. I think the way she incorporated makeup, masks, and prosthetics into her photos is really interesting. Though her masks are often much more subtle than mine, she was the inspiration for the material in the photo: the lipstick, the colors, the general idea.

Portraits, taken by Thomas Wilder

I think these photos are really interesting. I immediately recognized myself as the subject. I think a little of my personality shows through in these photos. In the first one especially, I look serene and peaceful. The second is more sad and wistful  Both of those things are qualities I strive for on a daily basis. If I hadn't known, I would have guessed that the photographer was male. There is something very straightforward about the photos that strikes me as being male.
I think I definitely fit into a female "genre" in these photos, with me clothes, and my hair down. I think society tends to associate softness and peace with women, and these photos convey that.
I also thought the comparison to Bernini's Ecstasy of St. Teresa was interesting:

Where do I fall in society? I'm still not sure of the answer to this question. I think at this point in my life, though I'm still just a college student, I am capable of being a good person relationally; a good friend, a good sister, a good daughter. These photos aren't really how I view myself. I think these photos show the side of myself that I put on when I'm talking to or relating to people I don;t know well. So, in that sense, I don't think either of these photos show my true self in the sense that they don't show all of me.

landscape & earthwork

Landscape

My photo is a boy standing under a streetlight in a suburban setting. The photo was taken at night during a bike ride, making it lower quality than usual. The value of the photo is fairly dark and distorted, which I attempted to fix through editing. The point of view is straight on.

For my art historical context, I paralleled this painting of Napoleon on his horse; the contrast struck me as funny- modern vs. historical, bike vs. horse, boy vs. man.

Whereas my Earthwork photos were about connecting to nature and the earth, my landscape is very suburban and modern and constructed. They are almost completely opposite.

My landscape, in it's own way, is celebrating the earth. I am celebrating our everyday ability to do mundane things, such a go on a bike ride at midnight. I think this was definitely my weakest project (due to the fact that I forgot about it until the night before), but I kind of like the way it turned out.

I think in a way I agree with the hypothesis that a landscape puts the photographer at the center of the universe. In a landscape, the photographer often desires the viewer to see the landscape as they see it, from their point of view. In the Earthworks project, I felt more of desire to see the land from the perspective of the land. We were in cooporation with  the Earth to create our final project.

I definitely think it would be a problem to see ourselves as the center of the universe all of the time. However, I also think it's important for our view and our perspective to be heard and seen, respectively. I think there is a place for everyone's point of view.

I think our presentation could have gone a lot smoother. We added some things last minute, and I think it showed. However, I really enjoyed making the video and taking the photos.

Getting Lost
My photos tend to express a feeling of greatness, instead of focusing on the small details. The point of view is often looking up, into the trees or sky. The colors are harsh and warm. They are hard on the eyes and bright. The photos incorporate light extensively.

I used a Louis Vuitton campaign photo series as my media quote. The colors in both sets were similar, but what intrigued me was the complete difference in setting and subject matter. The fashion campaign is sterile, clean, pale. My photos are earthy, dirty, harsh.

There is much that can be improved with my slideshow. I would like to work on the flow of the photoset. I also would like to continue on working on finding photos that are more similar than different to mine. I think  I did a decent job of explore with my camera, but would like to experiment more.
